Its 12 am and I'm at my desk, finally home after a night-out. Normal routine : come home, take makeup off, skincare routine and I'm off to bed. But almost always, before the "take my makeup off" phase, I would always stall the process and go about my makeup collection and swatch a few lipsticks and put on an eyeshadow. I can't be the only one, right?
So, I've decided to document these play times and write a review for each and every product I try on during this ungodly hour. And the first of them all is the Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon.
Let's begin.
First off, Hourglass tell us how it is. Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick. Check. Swatching this bad boy on my hands lead to a red mark for the next few days, I kid you not. Which isn't a bad thing in the pigment department. Honestly the price point of Hourglass products is way up there alongside luxury beauty brands like Chanel, Dior and Guerlain, so I do appreciate that it is not a sheer wash of colour and they give you your ringgits' worth.
The formula is very comfortable on the lips, and mattifies immediately upon one swipe albeit still 0.05% sticky afterwards, just enough to keep your lips feel moisturised. You can still build up to two swipes if you like, the liquid lipstick applies evenly and quite thinly, it's not too thick in its consistency, so the formula allows you to build up the coverage (although you honestly don't need to, it is very opaque). The Hourglass signature doe foot applicator distributes just enough product for the top and bottom lips, and the way the applicator is "vacuumed out" of the tube helps in getting rid of excessive product AND no wastage (yay).
1. L to R : heavy swatch, sheer swatch
2. one full swipe on top and bottom lips (lip liner : MAC Brick)
Icon is described as a classic, true red. Which is truly what it is. It has a mixture of undertones to it that allows for an off-duty look (clean skin, mascara, a touch of bronzer and red lips) and you don't need to pair it with blush as there is a degree of warmth to the red undertones yet it makes your teeth look white. It's truly playing mind games with me! The degree of "matteness" (yes, these do exist, liquid lipstick owners where you at) for this lipstick is quite a modern matte, it doesn't highlight any chapped dry lips due to the emollients in the formula (I've looked it up for you guys I got your back) while it doesn't give you a glossy sheen like it won't ever dry down. You can use it with a gloss to add a bit of shine. A clear gloss. The colour needs to be shown off.
Overall, I think the formula of these liquid lipstick is quite impressive as it doesn't accentuate the fine lines and dryness of my lips. I definitely love the colour and will be browsing for the nude tones in this collection.
Oh, did I mention that it's vegan?
